Protect Migrating Birds

The Connecticut River Gateway Commission voted unanimously on September 28, 2023 to endorse a call by “Lights Out CT” to minimize all non-essential lights during peak spring and fall bird migration periods.

Per the organization’s program material, millions of birds pass through Connecticut every spring and fall on their way to and from their nesting grounds. Connecticut is located along the Atlantic Flyway and migrating birds use our shorelines and green spaces to rest and refuel during their trip.

Excessive night light can have devastating effects on birds that migrate or hunt at night, killing millions worldwide as they collide with brightly lit buildings. That toll and other light pollution impacts led the Commission to promulgate a new light standard.

We hope that residents of the Zone, and elsewhere, will consider the “Lights Out CT” pledge to adjust their lighting from 11pm to 6am during peak spring and fall bird migration periods: April 1 – May 31 and August 15 – November 15.

You may also save energy and money on electric bills.
