The Gateway Commission in October 2024 sponsored a boat cruise north up the Connecticut River from Essex to near Gillette’s Castle, and then back south.
Town and local officials, partner organizations and Commission appointees enjoyed a fall afternoon on RiverQuest, operated by the Connecticut River Museum.
The Gateway Commission’s mission is to preserve the natural beauty of the lower Connecticut River valley. Speakers during the cruise pointed out scenic river landscapes and discussed the challenges in maintaining that beauty while recognizing a desire for local development. In addition, partner organizations shared information on their activity.
Guests include selectwomen from Chester and Deep River, and representatives of the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Education, Connecticut River Conservancy, Connecticut Forest and Park Association, CT National Estuarine Research Reserve, Connecticut River Museum, Connecticut River Coastal Conservation District, Rivers Alliance, Lower Connecticut River Valley Land Trust, Middlesex Land Trust, and the US Army Corps of Engineers.
